Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation to Continue Greenway Work at Fisher Farm and Abersham Parks

The Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Master Plan calls for upgrades to the Abersham/Fisher Farm properties in three phases. Phase I was the demolition and removal of five areas of damaged and/or unnecessary asphalt which is now complete.
Phase II of the Abersham/Fisher Farm project will begin in February 2017 when the J.D. Goodrum Co., (contracted by Mecklenburg County), begins preliminary work in Fisher Farm for the greenway which will be constructed this spring. The paved greenway was funded in the 2008 Mecklenburg County bond referendum and was specifically approved by county residents.

While work is going on, Fisher Farm will be closed for use from the parking area to the west branch of the East Rocky River. The attached map shows the alignment of security fencing. During this time, we encourage use of Abersham for walking. As a reminder, all dogs are to remain on-leash at these parks.

Once the greenway is completed in Fisher Farm, the paved path in Abersham will be repaired and widened to meet county standards for the full length of the greenway. We anticipate the project will be complete by July 2017.

“One of our core values states that we will provide greenways to our citizens as options for transportation and recreation, so we are really pleased that the county is doing this work over the next few months,” said Parks and Recreation Director Kathryn Spatz. “The finished greenway will be a real asset.”

Phase III is the creation of a picnic shelter/restroom in Abersham. Currently, we are unsure of when the county will fund this phase or a projected timeline.

Abersham is owned by the county, but maintained by the Town of Davidson. Fisher Farm is owned and maintained by the Town of Davidson.
