Citizens Invited to Jack Burney Award Ceremony:
Wednesday, November 25 at 10:00 a.m.

Citizens are invited to the G. Jackson Burney Community Service Award ceremony on Wednesday, November 25 at 10:00 a.m. at Davidson Town Hall.

The ceremony and following reception will honor long-time Davidson resident and retiring Town Manager Leamon Brice for his 25 years of deep and varied service to our town. The committee specifically noted Leamon's contribution in going far and above the traditional and typical scope of his position, leading Davidson through a generation of growth and development that has come to and will define the community for many generations moving forward. Former Mayor Randall Kincaid specifically underscored Leamon's effort to elevate public service from career status to way of life.

As one of the nominators wrote, “We believe that Leamon lives our town’s values whether he is in the office, at the board table, on the green, dancing to the sounds of his Carolina shag music, or walking the sidewalks of Davidson and meeting one on one with the people he calls his neighbors and friends. Think of where this town’s notions of progressive planning, citizen engagement, and open space and historic preservation might be without Leamon’s devotion to innovation and principle. As he leaves us for retirement, Davidson is the town it is because Leamon never flinched. He embraced visionary leadership, but he also cultivated it.”

The award is named for G. Jackson Burney, who served the town in many capacities, primarily in planning and communications. Since 2004, it has honored Burney and those whose unselfish service benefits the Davidson community. Previous award winners include Bernice Houston, William B. Mayhew, Baxter and John Fisher, Evelyn Carr, Annie Mildred Lowery, Scotty Nichols, John and Paula Kelton, Jane B. Ellithorpe, Ralph Quackenbush, Leland Park, Jean Jackson, Sterling Martin, Pam Maier, and Connie and Eddie Beach.

The ceremony and reception honoring Leamon Brice will be held on Wednesday, November 25 at 10:00 a.m. at Davidson Town Hall. The North Mecklenburg Moravian Band will play at 9:30 a.m. and Mayor John Woods will open the ceremony at 10:00 a.m. Jack Burney Award Committee Chairperson Connie Wessner and committee members Sam Maloney and Jerry Hancock will also contribute. Light refreshments will be served.
