Decoding the Mysteries of Food, Microbes, and Toxins to Create Optimal Health

Session I (May 12): Food As Medicine – Getting the Most from Your "Farmacy" and the "Skinny" on Fats
Did you know that every bite of food you take impacts your genes to promote either health or disease? In this first session, participants will learn about how food is grown and the food you eat is tied to increasing rates of chronic disease.

Session II (May 26): Gut Check – Why Microbial Health Is So Essential to Optimal Health
Our intestines are not only 25 feet long, but the surface areas is the size of a doubles tennis court and houses up to 80% of our immune system. In this session, you will learn ground-breaking science around our micro biome, and how a leaky gut can impact immune function and can drive inflammation leading to chronic diseases.

Session III (June 2): Detoxifying in a Toxic Environment – The Importance of Reducing Our Total Body Burden to Help Prevent Obesity, Diabetes, and Cancer
Individuals can differ in their ability to detoxify by 1000-fold. Understanding how accumulation of toxins are driving obesity, diabetes, and thyroid disorders will be discussed, along with how to reduce toxic exposures and facilitate detoxification.

How are You Sitting?

Sitting can be more hazardous to your body than you realize. If you work in an office or are at a desk or in front of a computer for a significant part of the day, this class can provide you with some valuable and useful information and tips to keep your body from breaking down. Physical therapist Joy Politis will discuss how to properly set up your work space and chair as well as give advice on alternatives to the standard chair.

Davidson-Cornelius Bike Expo - FREE

Whether you haven’t straddled a bike since your banana-seated Schwinn or you’re a seasoned cyclist, the Davidson-Cornelius Bike Expo will have something for everyone. The Expo will provide attendees an opportunity to demo bikes from area bike shops, learn about bicycle safety and maintenance, and experience unique bikes such as recumbents, folding cycles, tandems, electric assist bikes, and cargo bikes. Lots of kids' activities, too! Davidson Parks and Recreation will have their new solar-electric ELF bike to demo (made in Durham, NC) and the Town of Cornelius will have information on new greenways that are currently under development, and the development of the town’s Bicycle Master Plan.

Strength Training for Runners

This introductory class for runners and walkers (or for anyone who wants to participate) will be led by physical therapist Joy Politis to provide instructions on how to incorporate a strength training program into a regular running routine. If you are a new runner or are an experienced runner who wants to be stronger, this class can help you.

Paddleboard Classes

Stand-Up Paddleboard

Join us for an afternoon of instruction in the fast-growing sport of paddle boarding. During this 1.5 hour class, you will learn to stand-up paddleboard in a safe and controlled environment with experienced and qualified instructors. You will be gliding across the water in no time! All equipment is provided. Ages 13 and up.

Lake Davidson Paddle Tour

Do you enjoy paddleboarding as well as learning about where you live? If so, why not paddleboard and learn about what makes Lake Davidson so special? On this tour, the guide will lead you around the lake while sharing with you its history and secrets. This is an experience you do not want to miss. Ages 13 and up.

Register Now for DPR Pre-Summer and Summer Camps

Join us this summer for camp. We offer full-day and half-day camps for ages 3-17. If you are looking for art, fashion, sports, science, technology, and much more, DPR is the place for you. We are offering pre-summer camps for preschool aged children prior to the summer dismissal for most primary and secondary schools. Camps will run from the week of May 31 to the week of August 15.
