Roosevelt Wilson Park Temporarily Closed for Asbestos Remediation Work

Roosevelt Wilson Park Closure Asbestos

In 2017, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ), remediated asbestos contamination on properties near the Davidson Asbestos Site, the former Carolina Asbestos Company at 301 Depot Street.

At the request of Davidson residents, the EPA returned to town last year to conduct more sampling over a larger area and sample properties that were not tested in their initial effort in 2017.

Included in the findings, specific areas in Roosevelt Wilson Park, located at 420 Griffith Street, tested positive for asbestos-containing material. These areas were immediately fenced-off, clearly marked, and fixed with a temporary solution.

Beginning on April 12, the EPA will begin their remediation work at Roosevelt Wilson Park. The entire park will be closed and remediated, including areas that were tested and came back as non-detect for asbestos-containing material. Due to the high traffic nature of the park, the EPA and NCDEQ believe it will be appropriate to remediate the entire property with a long-term fix to best protect all those who will enjoy the park in the future. Work will continue for up to three weeks, weather-permitting. The timeline is subject to change. Signage will be placed at park entrances to advise residents of the work.

“We are so pleased that the EPA and NCDEQ are back in Davidson responding to the environmental concerns of our residents. We want to do everything we can to ensure the safety of those in our community,” said Town Manager Jamie Justice.
