Citizens Invited to Two Public Workshops about our

Public Facilities:

March 9 and April 6 at 6:00 p.m.

Plus, Register for a Tour of Town Hall

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Citizens are invited to two public workshops about our public facilities:

  • Thursday, March 9 and
  • Thursday, April 6

Both workshops are at Davidson College Presbyterian Church’s Congregation House at 218 Concord Road at 6:00 p.m. and each should last approximately 1.5 hours.

We will start with a brief presentation of the project to share the history and timeline, and then the architect we have hired, Creech & Associates, will lead attendees in a series of station exercises so citizens can provide direct feedback on several issues. Stations will consist of a large board or a table of information with a facilitator at each table. These are the topics that will be covered:

  • Things that make Davidson great
  • Architectural character and scale
  • Town hall site planning options
  • Parking
  • Davidson Farmer’s Market
  • Community space needs

The workshop on April 6 will provide a review of what was learned at the March 9 workshop, and Creech & Associates will provide an overall vision/plan for the area and some building site options. They will facilitate exercises that will allow citizens to provide feedback on visual preferences and site/building options, host questions and answers with the design team, and provide a display of boards where options will be presented and citizens will be able to “vote” by placing a sticker on an image.

Why is the town considering this project?

As Davidson’s population has grown from 4,000 in 1990 to almost 13,000 today, we have outgrown our existing town hall. Ensuring adequate space for our police and fire departments is particularly critical. We need to invest in our public facilities in order to keep pace with our service needs. We will study the approximately 4 acres of town-owned land on which our current town hall sits (please see area in red below).

This is not the catalyst project, where we were considering private-public partnerships to solve some of our space and parking needs on this land. However, as part of the catalyst process, we heard from hundreds of citizens that recognize our lack of parking downtown and a need for space at town hall.

At their July 12, 2016 meeting, the Davidson Board of Commissioners asked town staff to move forward with planning for our public facilities and to look at parking options.

Town staff have been working with a steering committee comprised of citizen experts in the fields of planning, architecture, construction, etc. to help guide the process and select an architect. Architect Creech & Associates have many years of experience in designing effective town halls, have conducted a space needs assessment of Davidson Town Hall, and will help us run the public workshops. This spring they will create a preliminary design based on citizen feedback and then provide us with a budget estimate. In early summer, plan options and a budget will be presented to the board of commissioners for a decision on whether to move forward with the project.

“We want our citizens to learn more about this public facilities study and provide feedback to guide the process,” said Assistant Town Manager and public facilities project manager Dawn Blobaum. “We’re offering tours of town hall so citizens can speak with town staff and assess the need for space.”

Davidson Town Hall Tours

In order for citizens to visualize our space needs, we’ve set up four identical town hall tours. Please register online at www.townofdavidson.org/TownHallTour. The lunchtime sessions will have a “Lunch and Learn” format where citizens can enjoy a light lunch while learning about the project as a whole, and tour town hall, including a visit to the police and fire departments. The evening sessions serve to accommodate citizens that are unavailable during daytime hours; no food will be served. Please meet in the board room. Please join us!

Here are the options for which to register:

  • Wednesday, March 22: “Lunch and Learn” from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 28: “Lunch and Learn” from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
  • Monday, April 3: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
