High-Priority Sidewalk Projects
Public Works and and Projects Director Doug Wright maintains the town's high-priority sidewalk projects and their estimated costs. Attached please find a presentation (PDF) made to the mayor and board of commissioners with proposed priorities based on funding allocations.
Jackson Street Sidewalk
The Town of Davidson is building a sidewalk along the west (railroad track) side of Jackson Street. The start date for the project is March 10, 2016, with an expected duration of 90 days, for completion in early June. Working hours will be Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Some parking spaces along Jackson St. will be coned off throughout the project to expedite the work.
Some benefits of the project are:
• Improved pedestrian and bicycle access to downtown and South Main St. for west side residents.
• Accessibility to the Davidson Farmer’s Market for those who park on Jackson St., Depot St., at the Davidson Presbyterian Church, and Sadler Square on Saturdays.
• Improved pedestrian and bicycle access to and from Brickhouse Tavern, Our Town Cinemas, Healthy Home Market, and The Egg at Davidson.
• As our core values state: Citizens need to move easily throughout the town and region, so government will provide a variety of options, such as sidewalks, bike paths, greenways, connected streets, and transit. This project will enhance pedestrian safety.
The project was ranked a high priority in the 2013 Davidson Walks and Rolls Plan, which can be found at www.townofdavidson.org/pedestrianmasterplan.
“Our Walks and Rolls Active Transportation Plan states that approximately 70% of our citizens don’t feel comfortable riding their bikes on our streets,” said Town Manager Jamie Justice. “This new 10-foot-wide sidewalk will enable more bicyclists to ride safely along Jackson Street.”
We are contracting with Carolina Siteworks, Inc., to build the sidewalk. The projected cost is $89,998.

The safety of our pedestrians and connectivity are very important to us, so we will be very happy when this project is complete.
